Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised serious concerns over the arrest of prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar in Kaduna, describing it as a worrying indication of threats to Nigeria’s democratic principles.
Obi disclosed that Sheikh Umar was taken into custody shortly after hosting him during a visit to Kaduna on Sunday, March 22, 2026. The reasons for the arrest have not been publicly clarified by the Kaduna State authorities or security agencies.
In his statement, Obi highlighted that the incident exemplifies an emerging trend of restrictions on freedom of speech and movement across the country. He expressed deep concern that ordinary citizens, as well as individuals perceived as political opponents, are increasingly being subjected to harassment and unwarranted persecution.
“This country must defend freedom and free speech, which are the hallmarks of every democratic society. Suppression and intimidation of dissent can never stand in a democratic society,” Obi said.
He called on the government and relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law and adhere strictly to democratic tenets in their engagement with citizens.
Obi also urged individuals or institutions attempting to undermine democracy to desist, noting that Nigeria’s democracy is already fragile and requires protection rather than further strain.
At the time of reporting, Sheikh Umar had not been formally charged, and Kaduna State authorities have not released an official statement regarding the arrest.
The development has sparked discussions among civil society groups and political observers about the state of civil liberties and governance in Nigeria.
