Nigeria Mourns Former Botswana President Festus Mogae

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President of Botswana, Festus Gontebanye Mogae, who passed away at the age of 86.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed Nigeria’s condolences to the government and people of Botswana, describing the late leader as a distinguished African statesman and respected economist.

The ministry noted that Mogae’s administration from 1998 to 2008 was widely recognised for strengthening democratic governance, maintaining economic stability, and advancing social development in Botswana.

“Nigeria joins the people of Botswana in mourning the loss of a leader whose commitment to public service and principled leadership contributed significantly to Botswana’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies,” the statement read.

The Federal Government also praised the late former president for his leadership during the HIV/AIDS crisis in Botswana, describing his response as courageous and visionary.

“His administration’s comprehensive response to the epidemic demonstrated visionary leadership and reaffirmed the importance of placing human dignity and public welfare at the centre of governance,” the ministry stated.

Nigeria further acknowledged Mogae’s contributions to peacebuilding and regional stability efforts across Africa after leaving office, particularly his involvement in supporting peace initiatives on the continent.

The statement added that Nigeria and Botswana share longstanding bilateral relations built on democratic ideals, African solidarity, and mutual respect.

“At this moment of mourning in Botswana, the Government and people of Nigeria stand in solidarity with the Government and people of Botswana and pray for strength and comfort for the bereaved family and the nation during this difficult period,” the statement added.
