Tinubu Appoints Retired Major General Famadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security coordination and intelligence operations.

The appointment was announced in a statement issued on Monday by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by the Head of Information and Public Relations, Chris Ugwuegbulam.

According to the statement, the appointment reflects the administration’s commitment to “strengthening internal security coordination, enhancing intelligence-driven operations, and deepening inter-agency collaboration in addressing emerging security threats across the country.”

A circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, described Famadewa as a seasoned security expert with over three decades of military and intelligence experience.

“Major General Famadewa (Rtd) is a highly decorated retired General with over three decades of distinguished military and intelligence service spanning national security strategy, intelligence fusion, counter-terrorism operations, and international security diplomacy,” the statement said.

The presidency noted that the retired General played a major role in shaping Nigeria’s intelligence coordination system during his tenure as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser between 2015 and 2021.

“He spearheaded the establishment of the Intelligence Fusion Centre (IFC) at ONSA, creating an integrated multi-agency intelligence platform that brought together the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces to improve national threat assessment and strategic response coordination,” the statement added.

Following his retirement from military service, Famadewa served as Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, where he contributed to policy discussions on policing, civil-security relations, and national security reforms.

The statement also highlighted his scholarly work, including a monograph titled “Policing and National Security in Nigeria,” which focused on strengthening cooperation between civil institutions and security agencies.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that the appointment would strengthen ongoing efforts to improve homeland security and intelligence coordination across the country.

According to the statement, the President believes the appointment “will further enhance the administration’s efforts toward achieving a safer and more secure Nigeria through improved coordination of homeland security initiatives, intelligence integration, and proactive risk management.”

The President also urged the retired General to “deploy his wealth of experience, professionalism, and strategic insight in advancing national security objectives and supporting the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.”
