The Federal Government has announced plans to roll out 10,000 electric tricycles as part of efforts to improve public transportation and promote cleaner mobility across the country.
The initiative, which will be implemented by the North East Development Commission (NEDC), is scheduled to commence in August 2026. The electric tricycles will initially be deployed across the North-East region, with plans for similar programmes to be replicated in other parts of the country.
Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 group, revealing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the expansion of the programme nationwide through the various regional development commissions.
According to Shettima, the electric tricycle initiative is part of a broader transportation reform programme designed to improve mobility, strengthen logistics and drive economic growth.
“The President has approved the replication of the initiative in other parts of the country by the various regional development commissions,” the Vice President said.
He explained that the administration is focused on creating a transportation system that seamlessly connects different modes of movement across the country.
“The priority of this administration is to move Nigeria from a fragmented transport system to an integrated logistics chain where ports, rail lines, CNG-powered trucks, inland waterways, airports and local feeder roads work together to support commerce, agriculture, industry and national integration,” Shettima stated.
The Vice President added that transportation reforms under the Tinubu administration are aimed at reducing costs, improving efficiency and boosting economic activity nationwide.
“The Federal Government’s transport reform agenda is anchored on the nationwide rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), major port upgrades and a stronger logistics chain,” he said.
The deployment of the 10,000 electric tricycles is expected to provide affordable and environmentally friendly transportation options while creating economic opportunities for operators and supporting regional development.
The initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure and advancing sustainable mobility solutions across the country.
