FG Extends NYSC Orientation Camp to Six Weeks, Introduces Skills-Focused Reforms

The Federal Government has approved a major overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), extending the orientation camp programme from three weeks to six weeks as part of sweeping reforms aimed at repositioning the scheme to better prepare Nigerian graduates for employment, entrepreneurship and national development.

Under the new reforms, military drills and parade activities during the orientation camp have been scrapped, while the traditional Passing Out Parade (POP) at the end of the one-year national service will be replaced with a graduation ceremony.

The government also approved the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform to project a more professional image and reflect the scheme’s renewed focus on national development and youth empowerment.

The expanded six-week orientation programme is expected to devote more time to practical skills acquisition, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, leadership development, financial literacy, civic responsibility and community service, while strengthening the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme.

According to the Federal Government, the reforms are intended to transform the NYSC from a largely ceremonial programme into a platform that equips corps members with relevant competencies for today’s labour market.

“These reforms mark a significant shift in the philosophy of the NYSC. The objective is to ensure that every corps member leaves the scheme with practical skills, entrepreneurial capacity and the confidence to contribute meaningfully to national development,” the government said.

It added that the extension of the orientation period would allow for more intensive training in innovation, technology, vocational education and leadership.

“The additional three weeks will provide corps members with greater opportunities to acquire hands-on skills, deepen their leadership abilities and build the resilience required to thrive in a rapidly changing economy,” the statement noted.

On the decision to discontinue military drills and replace the Passing Out Parade with a graduation ceremony, the government explained that the changes reflect the evolving priorities of the scheme.

“The focus is no longer on military style activities but on developing productive, innovative and globally competitive young Nigerians. National service should culminate in a celebration of learning, service and personal growth,” it stated.

The government further explained that the redesigned NYSC uniform symbolises a new identity for the scheme.

“The new uniform represents a modern NYSC one that inspires professionalism, excellence, discipline and national pride while reflecting the aspirations of a new generation of Nigerian graduates,” it added.

The reforms form part of the Federal Government’s broader agenda to modernise the NYSC, strengthen youth development and align the scheme with national economic priorities, including job creation, innovation and enterprise development.

Implementation guidelines, including the commencement date for the six-week orientation programme, the revised curriculum and the rollout of the new uniforms, are expected to be released by the Federal Government and the NYSC management in the coming weeks.
