The Federal Government has expressed deep sympathy and solidarity with the Government and people of Ghana following the devastating floods that swept through large parts of the country, including the capital, Accra, after torrential rainfall.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the flooding as a tragic disaster that has claimed at least 12 lives, displaced scores of residents, destroyed homes and critical infrastructure, and caused widespread disruption to livelihoods in affected communities.
The statement, signed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said the Nigerian government was profoundly saddened by the scale of the tragedy and the hardship being endured by families and communities across the affected areas.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria extends its deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the Government and the people of the Republic of Ghana following the devastating floods that struck large parts of the country, including the capital, Accra, after torrential rainfall,” the statement said.
It added that the disaster had “tragically claimed the lives of at least 12 people, displaced many residents, destroyed homes and infrastructure, and caused widespread disruption to livelihoods.”
According to the ministry, Nigeria is “profoundly saddened by this tragic loss of life and the immense hardship being endured by affected families and communities.”
“At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, those who sustained injuries, and all those whose homes and means of livelihood have been adversely affected by this natural disaster,” the statement added.
The ministry noted that the floods left a trail of destruction in parts of Ghana, particularly in Accra, with homes submerged, property damaged and many families forced out of their residences by rising floodwaters following heavy rainfall.
It said the scale of the devastation had not only deepened humanitarian concerns but also underscored the urgent need for continued rescue, relief and recovery efforts to support affected communities and restore normalcy.
Nigeria also commended the swift response of Ghana’s emergency services, security agencies and volunteers who have continued to carry out rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.
“The Government of Nigeria commends the swift response of emergency services, security agencies, and volunteers who continue to undertake rescue, relief, and recovery operations in the affected areas,” the ministry stated.
The Federal Government expressed confidence in the resilience and determination of the Ghanaian people, saying it believes the country will overcome the tragedy and recover from the losses caused by the floods.
“We are confident that the resilience, solidarity, and determination of the Ghanaian people will prevail as the country recovers from this unfortunate tragedy,” the statement said.
The ministry further reaffirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with Ghana during the period of mourning, stressing the longstanding relationship between both countries and their shared commitment to supporting one another in times of hardship.
“Nigeria stands in solidarity with the Government and people of Ghana during this period of mourning,” the statement said.
It added that Nigeria prayed “for the peaceful repose of the souls of those who lost their lives, the speedy recovery of the injured, and strength and comfort for all those affected by this disaster.”
The statement reflects the close diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Ghana, two leading West African nations whose relations are anchored on regional cooperation, economic partnership and mutual support under the framework of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Nigeria’s message of condolence comes amid ongoing rescue and recovery efforts in Ghana as authorities work to assist victims, assess the scale of the damage and provide relief to communities affected by the flooding.
