Activist Deji Adeyanju has accused FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of allegedly allocating canals and waterways in Abuja to politicians for estate development, attributing the situation to what he described as greed.
He took to his social media platform to criticise the minister, saying:
“Wike has destroyed Abuja. The town is stinking and flooded. I have never seen this kind of complete lunacy and greed before. Maitama and most parts of Abuja now flooded because of one man’s greed. How do you allocate canals and waterways to politicians to build estates on it?”
Adeyanju’s comments came amid flooding recorded in parts of Abuja following heavy rainfall, with areas including Maitama and other parts of the Federal Capital Territory affected.
The activist blamed the flooding on what he described as poor urban planning and alleged encroachment on natural waterways, accusing the FCT Administration of prioritising political interests over the proper management of the city.
His remarks have drawn attention to concerns over the development of estates around drainage channels, canals and other waterways in Abuja.
The flooding disrupted movement in some areas, with residents and motorists struggling to navigate affected roads as water accumulated following the downpour.
The FCT Administration has yet to directly respond to Adeyanju’s specific allegation that canals and waterways were allocated to politicians for estate development
