causing traffic gridlock.
Abuja Floods Disrupt Movement, Leave Residents Stranded
Several vehicles were reportedly submerged while business activities were disrupted as floodwaters invaded shops and residential areas.
A resident of Lokogoma, described the situation as alarming.
“The rain started early and within a short time the roads were completely flooded. Many motorists could not move, and some vehicles were trapped in the water. It was a very difficult experience,” he said.
Another resident, Temitope Samuel , called for urgent intervention from authorities.
“This is not the first time we are experiencing this kind of flooding. Government needs to improve the drainage system because residents are suffering every rainy season,” she said.
A commuter stranded along the Gudu axis, Chidebere Igwe, said the flooding disrupted normal activities.
“People were stranded for hours because many roads became impassable. We need long-term solutions to this problem,” he said.
Residents attributed the recurring floods to blocked drainage channels and rapid urban development, urging authorities to strengthen flood-control measures across the capital city.
Officials have advised residents to avoid flooded roads and waterways and to take necessary precautions as heavy rains continue during the peak of the rainy season.
The incident underscores the growing challenge of urban flooding in Abuja and the need for improved drainage infrastructure to mitigate future disasters.
