The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government on Friday, urging Muslims and all Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the values of compassion, humility, service and peaceful coexistence.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” Tunji-Ojo said.
“These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
He called on Nigerians to make the celebration an opportunity to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that the responsibility for building a united country rests on everyone.
The minister said, “Let us use this period to pray for the peace and cohesion of our dear country, recognising that national unity remains a shared responsibility.”
Tunji-Ojo also urged citizens to celebrate the occasion with restraint and mutual respect, while extending his best wishes to the Muslim community.
“I urge all citizens to observe the celebration with restraint and mutual respect, and I wish the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid ul Mawlid,” he said.
He further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring peace across the country.
“The present administration remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians and ensuring that peace is maintained at all times,” Tunji-Ojo said.
