FG Deploys Border Control System With 15m Data Points

The Federal Government has deployed a digital Border Control and Immigration Management System (BCIMS) containing more than 15 million data points to strengthen border security and improve immigration management across the country.

The Minister of Interior disclosed this at the formal closing ceremony of a specialised training programme on the system at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Headquarters in Abuja.

The minister said 87 immigration officers underwent seven days of intensive training to equip them with the skills required to operate the technology.

“For seven intensive days, 87 of our finest officers underwent hands-on training to master a technology that is completely reshaping how we guard our borders,” he said.

He described the system as a major shift towards real-time, intelligence-led border security, noting that it would improve the country’s capacity to monitor its borders and protect national sovereignty.

“This was not a routine exercise; it marked a decisive shift in how Nigeria defends its sovereignty,” the minister stated.

He explained that BCIMS went beyond conventional software, describing it as a live platform designed to improve border monitoring and security operations.

“BCIMS goes far beyond standard software. It operates as a live, intelligent platform holding more than 15 million data points,” he said.

According to him, the system would enable Nigeria to move away from slow, reactive checks towards real-time intelligence gathering and border monitoring.

“With this, we are permanently leaving behind the era of slow, reactive checks and moving into real-time, intelligence-led border security,” he added.

The minister said BCIMS was a key component of the Centralised Interior Management and Administration System (CIMAS), which the ministry is developing to integrate data across the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigerian Correctional Service, Federal Fire Service and other relevant agencies.

“As government, this platform is a foundational piece of the Centralised Interior Management and Administration System (CIMAS) that our ministry is building,” he said.

He explained that the initiative would establish a centralised data system to improve coordination among agencies under the ministry.

“We are creating one central authority of data across Immigration, Corrections, the Fire Service, and allied agencies. Under this system, a person’s identity remains uniform across every platform,” he said.

“That single standard is how we guarantee the safety of every Nigerian,” the minister added.

He said the Nigeria Immigration Service had made significant progress in moving away from paper-based documentation and manual processes to digital operations.

“Years ago in the Ministry of Interior, we inherited an agency that relied heavily on paper and manual processes, but today, guided by the vision of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the Nigeria Immigration Service ranks among the most advanced on the continent,” he stated.

The minister also highlighted the deployment of a data centre with more than eight petabytes of storage capacity and the establishment of a fully off-grid, solar-powered command hub.

He said the service had also developed internal technical capacity to ensure that its officers could manage the technology without relying on external contractors.

The minister stressed that continuous training remained essential to improving service delivery and institutional performance.

“As a ministry, we are committed to professional development, knowing that continuous training is the only path to institutional excellence,” he said.

He added that the government had achieved progress by prioritising strategic planning and efficient resource utilisation.

“We achieved this transformational step by prioritising strategic thinking over excessive spending,” he stated.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening border security in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“In alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, this achievement is only the beginning,” he said.

He added that the government would continue to improve immigration management and prevent a return to previous security and operational challenges.

“We remain firmly committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s borders will never return to vulnerability or inefficiency,” the minister said.
