President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed Nigeria’s readiness to deepen bilateral relations with Brazil, identifying trade, investment, agriculture, food security, energy and technology as key areas for expanded cooperation between both countries.
Tinubu stated this while congratulating Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, describing him as a friend and expressing optimism that his renewed mandate would provide an opportunity to strengthen the longstanding diplomatic and historical ties between Nigeria and Brazil.
In a statement issued by the State House on Monday, October 26, 2026, the Nigerian President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with Brazil to promote economic integration, strengthen multilateral cooperation and advance shared interests among countries of the Global South.
Tinubu said Nigeria and Brazil, as leading nations of the Global South, had opportunities to work together to address common economic and developmental priorities amid changes in the global order.
“As two leading nations of the Global South, we can promote economic integration and advance our shared interests in a rapidly changing global order,” Tinubu said.
He noted that the relationship between both countries was built on longstanding friendship and historical connections, which could serve as a foundation for deeper economic engagement and mutually beneficial partnerships.
The President expressed his desire to expand cooperation across several strategic sectors, including trade and investment, agriculture and food security, energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, science and technology, education, aviation and cultural exchange.
According to him, stronger collaboration in these areas could create opportunities for both countries to pursue common interests and strengthen their economic relationships.
Tinubu’s proposed areas of cooperation come as Nigeria continues to pursue international partnerships aimed at expanding economic opportunities, attracting investment and strengthening its engagement with countries across different regions.
Trade and investment remain among the areas highlighted by the President, with Nigeria and Brazil positioned to explore opportunities for increased commercial engagement and partnerships between businesses in both countries.
Agriculture and food security were also identified as important sectors for cooperation, alongside energy, oil and gas, manufacturing, science and technology.
Tinubu further emphasised the importance of strengthening educational partnerships, aviation links and cultural exchanges as part of efforts to broaden relations beyond traditional diplomatic and economic engagements.
The President also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to multilateral cooperation with Brazil, stressing the importance of advancing shared priorities across Africa, South America and the wider Global South.
“I affirm Nigeria’s continued commitment to working with Brazil to strengthen multilateral cooperation and advance shared priorities in Africa, South America, and across the Global South,” he said.
He added that Nigeria remained committed to working with Brazil to promote common interests and strengthen cooperation on issues affecting both countries and their respective regions.
The renewed emphasis on Nigeria-Brazil relations reflects Tinubu’s stated interest in building stronger partnerships with other leading countries of the Global South, particularly in areas that could support economic integration and cooperation on shared development goals.
Brazil, the largest country in South America, and Nigeria, one of Africa’s leading economies, have longstanding diplomatic relations and significant populations, giving both countries a basis for engagement across trade, agriculture, energy, education and culture.
Tinubu said the re-election of Lula presented an opportunity to build on these historical connections and pursue a more expansive partnership between the two countries.
The Nigerian leader concluded his congratulatory message by wishing the Brazilian President success in his new term, extending his goodwill on behalf of the Nigerian people.
“On behalf of the people of Nigeria, I wish you a successful new term in office,” Tinubu said.
He signed the message as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, reaffirming the country’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Brazil and advancing cooperation in areas of shared interest.
