The Federal Government has disbursed N38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions across the country under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund to address infrastructure deficits and improve teaching and learning facilities.
The disbursement covers 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education, with the funds earmarked for approved projects aimed at strengthening educational infrastructure and addressing critical institutional needs.
The Federal Ministry of Finance disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, October 25, 2026, noting that the intervention was part of the government’s efforts to improve the quality of tertiary education and support the development of public institutions nationwide.
According to the ministry, universities received the largest share of the allocation, with N28.5 billion disbursed to 79 institutions, while 46 polytechnics received a total of N5.8 billion.
The 41 colleges of education were allocated N4.7 billion to support projects designed to improve their infrastructure and learning environments.
The ministry said the disbursement was intended to enable beneficiary institutions to implement approved projects addressing critical infrastructure gaps and other identified institutional needs.
“The funds are expected to enable beneficiary institutions to commence or advance approved projects addressing critical infrastructure and other identified institutional needs,” the statement said.
It added that the intervention was designed to strengthen the quality of tertiary education in Nigeria and improve the capacity of public institutions to deliver effective academic programmes.
The ministry explained that the funding formed part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address the needs of public universities and support the implementation of agreed measures under the Memorandum of Understanding between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The statement said the intervention was part of efforts to ensure that public institutions received support to address pressing infrastructure challenges and improve conditions for teaching and learning.
The funding is expected to support approved projects aimed at improving educational facilities, strengthening institutional capacity and providing a more conducive environment for students and academic staff.
Public tertiary institutions in Nigeria have continued to face challenges associated with inadequate infrastructure, pressure on existing facilities and the need to accommodate growing student populations.
The ministry stressed that the effectiveness of the intervention would depend on proper coordination among the relevant government agencies and the beneficiary institutions.
“The disbursement underscores the importance of effective coordination between the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Ministry of Education and beneficiary institutions in ensuring that approved public funding translates into tangible improvements in educational infrastructure and institutional capacity,” the statement said.
The ministry emphasised that collaboration among the agencies and institutions was essential to ensuring that the funds achieved their intended objectives.
It added that the intervention was expected to contribute to the development of tertiary education by supporting infrastructure projects and addressing identified institutional requirements.
The government’s allocation of N38.93 billion to the institutions represents a targeted intervention in public tertiary education, with universities accounting for the largest share of the funding.
The ministry also advised members of the public seeking details of the beneficiary institutions and their respective allocations to visit the official website of the Federal Ministry of Finance.
