LASTMA Sanctions 19 Officers Over Unprofessional Conduct

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has sanctioned 19 of its officers for various acts of misconduct recorded in 2025, as part of efforts to strengthen discipline and improve traffic management across the state.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this on Thursday in Lagos, noting that the sanctions followed disciplinary actions approved by the Lagos State Civil Service Commission.

According to him, five officers were dismissed from service, nine were demoted, while the remaining officers received severe warning letters.

Bakare-Oki said the authority had intensified its internal monitoring mechanisms to curb excesses among officers deployed on Lagos roads.

“We have been able to improve our surveillance unit, and on a daily basis, officers move out to check the excesses of our men on the road,” he said.

He explained that surveillance officers operate undercover to monitor compliance with established guidelines.

“The surveillance officers go out in plain clothes, like a mystery shopper, to identify our men who intend to operate against laid down guidelines. These are what we put in place to check the excesses of our men on the road,” Bakare-Oki added.

The LASTMA boss also emphasized that complaints from members of the public were treated seriously, stressing that all allegations of misconduct were thoroughly investigated before sanctions were imposed.

“We have a series of examples where our men are penalised whenever they are reported, and we do due diligence to ensure that we establish the truth. If our men are found wanting, they are always punished,” he said.

Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to improving traffic management in Lagos, assuring residents of LASTMA’s readiness to ensure the free flow of vehicles and the seamless movement of people and goods across the state.
