Anaesthesiologist Suspended as Adichie Seeks Justice Over Son’s Death

The anaesthesiologist involved in the treatment of the late 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Adichie, has been suspended as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Lagos.

Solicitors representing Adichie and her partner, Dr Ivara Esege, have issued a legal notice accusing the hospital and its medical personnel of negligence, alleging breaches of duty of care during diagnostic procedures carried out on January 6, 2026. The child, Nkanu Nnamdi, died in the early hours of January 7 after reportedly developing complications under intravenous sedation with propofol.

Confirming the suspension, the Lagos State Government said the probe was ongoing. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr Kemi Ogunyemi, said, “The hospital is also doing its own internal investigation, and as far as we know, the anaesthesiologist involved has been suspended. We will be transparent and follow due protocol.”

In a statement, Adichie alleged that her son, who was scheduled for medical evacuation abroad, was given an “excessive dose of propofol” and was not properly monitored. “The situation deteriorated rapidly, leading to seizures and cardiac arrest,” she said.

The family’s legal team warned that failure by the hospital to release medical records and preserve evidence would attract further legal action, as public outrage continues over the incident.
