Suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a Juma’at Mosque in Gamboru Ward, near the Customs area of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The explosion occurred during the Maghrib prayer while worshippers were inside the mosque. As of the time of filing this report, details regarding casualties or the extent of damage remained unclear.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, ASP Nahum Daso, said he could not immediately confirm the incident but disclosed that he was on his way to the scene for assessment.
The suspected blast caused panic among residents of the area, with heightened anxiety reported in parts of the city ahead of the 2025 Christmas celebrations.
Security operatives have since cordoned off the area to prevent further incidents and to allow for preliminary investigation.
