China and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations through cultural exchange and sports diplomacy, as the China Cultural Center in Nigeria hosted the “Passion of Chinese Wushu: Culture Heritage Chinese Wushu Premium Exhibition” in Abuja.
The event brought together government officials, sports administrators, cultural enthusiasts, students and members of the diplomatic community to celebrate Chinese martial arts and promote people-to-people exchanges between both countries.
Speaking at the exhibition, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Embassy and Director of the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, Yang Jianxing, described Wushu as more than a sport, saying it represents China’s rich cultural heritage and enduring values.
“Wushu is not merely a sport; it is a cultural language and a spiritual heritage. It embodies the Chinese nation’s enduring spirit of self-improvement and reflects values such as respect, virtue, harmony and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
According to Yang, the essence of martial arts is not conflict but peace, noting that the Chinese character for “Wu” conveys the idea of stopping violence and promoting harmony.
He said the exhibition, featuring renowned Wushu expert Professor Wu Dong and a delegation from Beijing Sport University, would provide Nigerians with a unique opportunity to experience Chinese martial arts through lectures, demonstrations and interactive sessions.
Yang noted that the event coincides with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria as well as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
He highlighted the steady growth of bilateral cooperation over the years in infrastructure, education, trade and culture, stressing that the strength of China-Nigeria relations is rooted not only in practical cooperation but also in the friendship shared by the peoples of both nations.
“As we stand at a new historical starting point, we will continue to organize more diverse and meaningful cultural programmes that promote mutual understanding and deepen friendship between China and Nigeria,” he said.
Representing the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, Musa Amodu praised the Chinese government and cultural institutions for using sports and culture as tools for diplomacy and international cooperation.
Amodu said Wushu embodies values that resonate globally, including discipline, courage, self-control and excellence.
“Sports diplomacy offers both Nigeria and China a powerful platform to build deeper connections. Sports speaks a universal language, crossing borders, bridging differences and bringing people together in ways formal diplomacy sometimes cannot,” he said.
He noted that while the relationship between Nigeria and China is often measured through trade, infrastructure and economic cooperation, cultural and sporting exchanges remain equally important in strengthening ties between citizens of both countries.
The National Sports Commission official also commended China for its continued support in capacity-building initiatives, revealing that two technical officials from the commission recently returned from a training programme in China organized by the Academy for International Business Officials.
He called for expanded cooperation in sports administration, coaching development, sports science, infrastructure management, anti-doping programmes and youth development.
Amodu said Nigeria’s youthful population and China’s advanced sports systems present opportunities for both countries to collaborate on athlete development, sports technology, research and traditional sports promotion.
“The National Sports Commission is open and ready for deeper engagement with the Chinese Mission in Nigeria, the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, Beijing Sport University and other relevant Chinese institutions,” he said.
He added that stronger cooperation in sports and culture would not only benefit athletes and administrators but also further cement the friendship between the peoples of Nigeria and China.
Also speaking, Director of Programmes of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Abiodun Ogidan, reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to promoting cultural exchange and strengthening Nigeria-China relations through media collaboration and public education.
Representing the Director-General of FRCN, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, Ogidan commended the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Center in Nigeria for their efforts in fostering intercultural dialogue, mutual understanding and friendship through cultural initiatives such as the Wushu exhibition.
She highlighted the longstanding partnership between FRCN and the Chinese Embassy through the Ni Hao programme, which is broadcast nationwide twice weekly on the corporation’s extensive network of over 42 FM stations and several zonal stations.
According to her, the programme serves as a platform for educating Nigerians about Chinese culture, language, tourism, education, sports, innovation and the growing relationship between both countries.
“This partnership has provided an invaluable platform for showcasing China’s culture, tourism, innovation and development achievements to Nigerians while fostering greater understanding and appreciation of the enduring friendship between our two nations,” she said.
Ogidan noted that the collaboration has delivered mutual benefits by enhancing public awareness of Chinese cultural initiatives in Nigeria while enriching FRCN’s content and strengthening its role as a bridge for international understanding and cooperation.
She reaffirmed FRCN’s commitment to sustaining and deepening the partnership, expressing confidence that continued collaboration would further promote cultural exchange, educational engagement and stronger people-to-people connections between Nigeria and China.
The exhibition featured martial arts demonstrations, cultural presentations and interactive sessions designed to showcase the philosophy, discipline and artistic beauty of Chinese Wushu while fostering greater understanding between the two nations.
