FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday to Mark Democracy Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day, reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance, national unity, and the rule of law.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

According to the minister, June 12 remains a landmark date in Nigeria’s democratic journey, symbolizing the courage, resilience, and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the entrenchment of democratic governance in the country.

“June 12 occupies a special place in our national history. It represents the triumph of the democratic spirit of the Nigerian people and honours the sacrifices of those who stood firm in the struggle for freedom, justice, and representative government,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He noted that the legacy of those sacrifices continues to shape the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state.

“June 12 is more than a public holiday; it is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by countless Nigerians who fought to secure and sustain democratic governance in our country. Their courage and determination remain a source of inspiration for present and future generations,” he added.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving and strengthening democratic values, including transparency, accountability, inclusive governance, and adherence to the rule of law.

“The Federal Government remains steadfast in its resolve to protect and uphold the principles that underpin our democracy. We will continue to promote transparency, accountability, and citizen participation as essential pillars of national development,” he stated.

He stressed that the administration would continue to uphold democratic ideals without compromise.

“Nigeria’s democratic journey has not been without challenges, but our collective resilience has continued to strengthen the foundations of our nation. We must remain united in safeguarding the values that bind us together as one people,” the minister said.

Tunji-Ojo also emphasized the importance of security in sustaining democratic institutions, noting that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue efforts to safeguard lives and property across the country.

“A secure and peaceful environment is fundamental to the success of any democracy. We will continue to strengthen internal security mechanisms to ensure that Nigerians can live, work, and participate in civic life without fear,” he said.

“As a government, we recognize that security and democracy are closely linked. Our efforts to strengthen internal security are aimed at creating an environment where citizens can freely exercise their rights and pursue their aspirations without fear,” he added.

The minister called on citizens to use the Democracy Day holiday as a moment for reflection on the nation’s democratic progress and the responsibilities that come with citizenship.

“The observance of Democracy Day provides an opportunity for national reflection and renewed commitment to the ideals of unity, tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and respect for democratic institutions,” he said.

He further urged Nigerians to recommit themselves to national unity, peaceful coexistence, and active participation in nation-building.

“Democracy thrives when citizens actively participate in the affairs of their nation. We therefore encourage all Nigerians to continue to engage constructively in the democratic process and contribute to the development of our country,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.

“The strength of our democracy does not rest solely on government institutions but also on the commitment of citizens to uphold civic responsibility, respect the rule of law, and promote national unity in all circumstances.”

The minister wished Nigerians a peaceful Democracy Day celebration and urged them to remain committed to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.

“As we commemorate Democracy Day 2026, I urge all Nigerians to remain law-abiding, patriotic, and committed to the shared responsibility of building a peaceful, secure, and prosperous nation for generations to come,” he said.
