AEF Pushes Major Healthcare, Economic Relief Package for Retired Soldiers

The Africa Economic Forum (AEF) is pushing a major healthcare and economic relief package for retired military personnel, with proposals for a state-of-the-art veterans’ health centre in Abuja and a special programme to help former servicemen and women access goods and services at discounted rates.

The proposal was unveiled during a courtesy visit by an AEF delegation led by its Chief Engagement Officer, Dr. Hope Uweja, to the Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on the Air Force, Hon. Rufus Ojuawo, in Abuja.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Uweja outlined key components of the initiative, including the establishment of a state-of-the-art Health Services Centre in Abuja dedicated to veterans and the introduction of a Senior Life Programme designed to enhance their economic well-being.

According to him, the Senior Life Programme would enable retired military personnel to access goods and services at discounted rates, thereby strengthening their purchasing power and improving their quality of life.

“Our veterans have made immense sacrifices in service to the nation and deserve access to quality healthcare, economic opportunities and social support that will enable them live dignified and productive lives after retirement,” Dr. Uweja said.

He explained that the initiative would also focus on strengthening regional security through collaboration with the Armed Forces and other stakeholders.

“Beyond veterans’ welfare, we are proposing a Security Summit for the Sahel region because peace and stability in West Africa require sustained cooperation among governments, security institutions and development partners. Security and economic development must go hand in hand,” he stated.

Dr. Uweja further disclosed that the proposal would be funded through a blended financing mechanism that allows multiple stakeholders to contribute according to their areas of interest.

“The blended financing model provides flexibility and sustainability. It creates opportunities for governments, private investors, development institutions and philanthropic organisations to support specific components of the programme while ensuring transparency and long-term impact,” he added.

Responding on behalf of the Chairman of the House Committee on the Air Force, Hon. Ojuawo welcomed the proposal, describing it as timely and relevant.

“This proposal is coming at a very important time when there is increasing national attention on the welfare of military veterans. The House of Representatives is committed to supporting initiatives that improve their living conditions and recognise their invaluable contributions to national security,” Ojuawo said.

The lawmaker, a retired Air Vice Marshal, disclosed that the House of Representatives is currently considering a Veterans Federation Bill aimed at addressing key issues affecting former military personnel.

“We are already working on legislation that will provide a stronger institutional framework for veterans’ welfare. The proposed Veterans Federation Bill is intended to address many of the challenges confronting retired servicemen and women across the country,” he noted.

Hon. Ojuawo invited the Africa Economic Forum to participate in the public hearing on the bill and contribute its expertise to the legislative process.

“We encourage the Africa Economic Forum to be part of the public hearing and share its perspectives. Stakeholder input is critical to ensuring that the final legislation effectively serves the interests of our veterans,” he said.

The public hearing on the proposed Veterans Federation Bill is scheduled to hold on Monday, June 15, 2026.
