President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says his administration is delivering on its promise to strengthen food security through increased local fertiliser production and targeted support for farmers.
The President said the government moved swiftly to cushion the impact of global supply chain disruptions and rising fertiliser costs triggered by conflicts in the Middle East.
“When we came into office, we made a promise to Nigerians that food security would be a major pillar of our Renewed Hope Agenda. That promise is being kept.”
Tinubu said the restructured Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) has secured more than 449,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser inputs equivalent to about nine million bags while Nigeria is on course to produce 1.1 million metric tonnes, or 22 million bags, of fertiliser this year.
He said strategic procurement measures have saved the country ₦61.58 billion in 2026, helping to keep fertiliser affordable for farmers.
“We strengthened procurement, secured critical raw materials, signed forward agreements, improved coordination across the value chain, and protected Nigeria’s local fertiliser blending industry from the worst effects of global market disruption.”
The President noted that Nigeria now has more than 90 operational fertiliser blending plants the highest blending capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa boosting local production, creating jobs and strengthening food security.
To ensure farmers receive inputs on time, Tinubu said the government launched the Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (RH-FISP) through the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF).
Under the programme, 515,720 bags of locally produced fertiliser are being distributed to 128,930 smallholder farmers across 25 states and the FCT during the current planting season.
“Our administration will not relent in its efforts to protect farmers, raise productivity, strengthen the agricultural value chain, support local industry, and ease pressure on food prices over time.”
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to agriculture, the President said the government would continue implementing practical measures to improve food security nationwide.
“This is the meaning of promise made, promise kept. We will continue to take practical steps to strengthen Nigerian agriculture and protect food security for every Nigerian.”
