FG Explores Robotics, AI Programme for Schools

The Federal Ministry of Education is exploring a proposed programme by Techxagon Academy to introduce practical training in robotics, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies in Nigerian schools.

The Applied Technology, Robotics and Innovation (ATRI) Programme was presented to officials of the Ministry as part of efforts to strengthen practical technology education and equip students with relevant skills.

Representing the Director of Education Support Services, the Deputy Director, Support Health Education Division, Mrs Njideka Ogbuke, commended Techxagon Academy for its efforts to improve learners’ capacity to engage meaningfully with technology.

Ogbuke said the increasing role of technology in education required stronger investment in teachers’ capacity to handle emerging technologies.

She also stressed the importance of ensuring that technology programmes introduced into schools were aligned with national education priorities.

“The growing importance of technology in education makes it necessary to strengthen teachers’ capacity in emerging technologies while ensuring alignment with national education priorities,” she said.

The Deputy Director, School Support Division, Mr Fapohunda Solomon, described the proposed initiative as “laudable,” saying the Ministry would give consideration to the recommendations presented by the Academy.

“The presentation and recommendations will be conveyed to Management for consideration and further direction,” Solomon said.

Presenting the ATRI Programme, Techxagon Academy’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr Jude Akonam, said the initiative was designed to give students practical exposure to key areas of emerging technology.

According to him, the programme would cover “coding, robotics, artificial intelligence, electronics, automation, IoT, drones and 3D design.”

Akonam said the programme would not focus only on students, but would also provide training for teachers to improve their ability to deliver practical technology education.

He explained that the proposed pilot would involve selected schools across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, subject to approval by the Ministry.

The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its openness to credible partnerships that strengthen teacher capacity and equip learners with practical technological skills.

The Ministry said such initiatives must support national education priorities and contribute to preparing Nigerian learners for an increasingly technology-driven environment.
