Nigeria and Jamaica have signed a new Technical Assistance Agreement aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation and strengthening the impact of Nigeria’s Technical Aid Corps (TAC) Programme in Jamaica.
The agreement was signed on Friday, September 25, 2026, following bilateral talks between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith.
The talks were held on the margins of the high-level segment of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
The discussions focused on deepening relations between Nigeria and Jamaica, promoting people-to-people exchanges and identifying new areas for bilateral cooperation.
Johnson Smith expressed appreciation to Nigeria for the contribution of the TAC Programme to Jamaica’s national development.
She specifically highlighted the programme’s contributions in health, education and local fabric artisanry.
“The contribution of the TAC Programme to Jamaica’s national development has been significant, particularly in health, education and local fabric artisanry,” Johnson Smith said.
She said the programme’s impact had extended beyond technical skills development to communities across Jamaica.
According to her, the initiative had also helped promote “cultural and creative exchanges” between Nigeria and Jamaica.
The Jamaican minister’s comments came as both countries moved to formalise and expand technical cooperation through the new agreement.
The agreement is expected to provide a framework for strengthening Nigeria’s technical assistance to Jamaica and expanding opportunities for cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The two ministers also discussed the importance of strengthening people-to-people exchanges and identifying new avenues for bilateral cooperation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the signing of the agreement “underscores the commitment of Nigeria and Jamaica to translating their longstanding fraternal ties into practical cooperation.”
The ministry added that the partnership would help “enhance people-to-people contact” and advance mutually beneficial development initiatives between the two countries.
The agreement further reinforces the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Jamaica, with both countries seeking to translate their historical and cultural ties into practical development cooperation.
