First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has partnered with All Progressives Congress (APC) senators and senatorial candidates to implement two welfare programmes worth ₦12.1 billion for elderly citizens and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) across the country.
The programmes, under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), will provide ₦200,000 each to 250 beneficiaries in every senatorial district across Nigeria’s 109 senatorial districts.
The First Lady, who is the National Chairman of the RHI, announced the partnership during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting attended by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen; and APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, among other political and legislative leaders.
The first programme, the RHI Economic Empowerment Programme for Persons with Disabilities, is scheduled for December 3, 2026, to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The initiative, which is the second edition of the programme, falls under the economic empowerment component of the Renewed Hope Initiative.
The second programme, the RHI Elderly Support Scheme, will hold on December 17, 2026, and is designed to provide financial assistance to citizens aged 65 years and above.
The elderly support scheme is the fourth edition since its introduction, with 250 beneficiaries in each senatorial district expected to receive ₦200,000.
Explaining the decision to adopt the senatorial district implementation model, the First Lady said the approach was designed to optimise grassroots distribution and ensure that the interventions reach the intended beneficiaries.
She noted that the model would broaden the reach of both programmes and make it easier to extend support to vulnerable citizens across the country.
Oluremi Tinubu also disclosed that the Renewed Hope Initiative would maintain its tradition of extending the two interventions to veterans, in addition to beneficiaries selected from the 109 senatorial districts.
The First Lady further charged APC senatorial candidates with ensuring transparency and accountability in the distribution of the funds.
She emphasised that the programmes must go beyond political, ethnic and religious considerations, insisting that assistance should reach all deserving constituents irrespective of their affiliations.
According to her, the interventions should not be limited to APC members but should be accessible to eligible elderly citizens and persons with disabilities who require support within their communities.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen; and APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, commended the First Lady for her continued commitment to supporting vulnerable populations.
They observed that the Renewed Hope Initiative plays an important role in strengthening social welfare, bridging gaps within communities and fostering closer relationships between political leaders and the citizens they represent.
The stakeholders also acknowledged the importance of programmes that extend support to elderly citizens and persons with disabilities, particularly at the grassroots level.
Members of the Board of Trustees of the Renewed Hope Initiative were also present at the meeting.
