Belgium winger Jérémy Doku has revealed he is prepared to leave the FIFA World Cup to be by his wife’s side when she gives birth to their first child, saying family comes before football.
The 24-year-old is currently with Belgium at the tournament, but his wife, Shireen, is expected to give birth in early July, a period that could coincide with the knockout stages if Belgium advance deep into the competition.
Speaking about the situation, Doku made it clear that he would not want to miss the birth of his child.
“It’s my first child, so I would definitely want to be there,” he said.
The Manchester City star acknowledged the potential clash between his family responsibilities and Belgium’s World Cup ambitions but insisted some moments are bigger than football.
“Of course, I’m here to represent my country and help the team, but becoming a father for the first time is something special,” Doku said.
The Belgian Football Federation is reportedly prepared to support the player should he need to travel during the tournament, with arrangements expected to be made for his departure and possible return to the squad.
Doku’s comments have generated widespread support from fellow players and fans, many of whom believe family should take precedence over sporting commitments.
England forward Ollie Watkins was among those who backed the Belgian winger’s stance.
“You can’t get that moment back. Football is important, but family comes first,” Watkins said.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia also expressed understanding of the situation, noting that the squad would support Doku regardless of the decision he ultimately makes.
“We all understand how important such a moment is in a player’s life. We will respect whatever decision he has to make,” Garcia said.
For Doku, the World Cup represents one of the biggest stages in football. Yet as Belgium chase glory, the winger could soon face an even greater personal milestone — welcoming his first child into the world.
His dilemma highlights the delicate balance elite athletes often face between professional commitments and family life, with Doku making it clear where his priorities lie when the moment arrives.
