The Federal Government has described the progress made on Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (DSO) programme as a major breakthrough, following a high-level meeting with key stakeholders in the broadcasting and communications industry.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the meeting produced broad consensus on critical issues surrounding the digital transition, setting the stage for accelerated implementation of the programme.
“The level of agreement we have achieved shows that stakeholders are aligned on the future of Nigeria’s broadcasting industry. This is a strong foundation for accelerated implementation,” Idris said.
The meeting brought together regulators, broadcasters, signal distributors, content creators, manufacturers and satellite operators to resolve outstanding issues affecting the rollout of the DSO programme.
According to the Minister, stakeholders agreed on key pillars of the transition, including the adoption of a hybrid broadcasting model, the continued relevance of Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), stronger investment protection and sustained stakeholder engagement.
Describing the DSO as a game changer for the media industry, Idris said, “The DSO is not merely a technical migration, but a transformational initiative capable of expanding jobs, boosting local content production, attracting investment and strengthening Nigeria’s creative economy.”
He commended stakeholders for putting national interest above sectoral concerns, saying, “The outcome reflects a mature understanding of national priorities over sectoral interests.”
The Minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for the success of the programme.
“The Federal Government remains committed to providing a stable regulatory environment, safeguarding investments and ensuring inclusive implementation that leaves no stakeholder behind,” he said.
A communiqué issued after the meeting recommended quarterly stakeholder engagements, improved business models for broadcasters and enhanced support for local manufacturing and content development.
The Federal Government said it would continue to work closely with industry players to ensure the successful rollout of the DSO programme and maximise its economic and social benefits for Nigerians.
