The Federal Government has dismissed claims by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi that he is being targeted by the Tinubu administration, describing the allegations as false and politically motivated.
Reacting to Obi’s recent comments, the Presidency said his account of an airport incident involving his vehicle did not amount to government harassment, suggesting that the issue may have resulted from a parking violation.
“Mr Obi’s claim of being targeted by the government is unfounded and misleading. The incident involving his vehicle at the airport, by his own account, points to a possible breach of parking regulations rather than any act of intimidation,” the Presidency said.
It also rejected Obi’s claims that his life could be at risk ahead of the 2027 election and that individuals are being pressured not to invite him to social events.
“These claims are nothing more than a fabricated narrative designed to attract undue sympathy and divert attention from his credibility issues and political challenges,” the statement added.
On Fidelity Bank, where Obi reportedly has a significant interest, the Presidency maintained that the institution is not under any form of government pressure.
“The government is certainly not targeting Fidelity Bank. The institution continues to thrive and benefit from the economic reforms being implemented by this administration,” it said.
The Presidency said the Tinubu administration remains focused on its reform agenda and has no reason to target Obi or interfere with his political activities.
“The Federal Government has neither the time nor the inclination to be distracted by self-serving narratives or unverifiable allegations. Our focus remains on consolidating reforms for the benefit of Nigerians,” the statement said.
