The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure as a key driver of productivity, innovation and economic growth.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, stated this during a visit to Galaxy Backbone Limited in Abuja, where he inspected the organisation’s digital infrastructure and engaged with its management on its operations, capabilities and expansion plans.
Edun said digital infrastructure should no longer be viewed simply as a technology investment but as a critical component of the nation’s economic infrastructure.
“Digital infrastructure must be viewed not merely as a technology investment, but as economic infrastructure,” he said.
According to the Minister, reliable connectivity, secure digital platforms, resilient data infrastructure and strong cybersecurity capabilities are essential for improving government efficiency, supporting businesses, attracting investment and strengthening Nigeria’s competitiveness globally.
“For Nigeria to improve the efficiency of government, support businesses, attract investment and compete globally, we need reliable connectivity, secure platforms, resilient data infrastructure and strong cybersecurity capabilities,” Edun said.
He also highlighted the opportunity presented by the Federal Government’s Buy Nigeria initiative to strengthen indigenous technology capacity and retain more value within the domestic economy.
“The Buy Nigeria initiative provides an opportunity to strengthen indigenous technology capacity, retain value within the domestic economy and create greater opportunities for Nigerian solutions across software, hardware and digital services,” he said.
Edun said Galaxy Backbone plays an important role in providing shared digital infrastructure and secure services across government.
He assured that the Ministry of Finance would continue to support strategic institutions whose capabilities contribute to Nigeria’s broader economic transformation.
“Building Nigeria’s digital capacity is ultimately about building the capacity of the Nigerian economy,” the Minister said.
