FG Targets Plateau as Nigeria’s Livestock Powerhouse

The Federal Government has unveiled an ambitious livestock development roadmap designed to transform Plateau State into Nigeria’s leading livestock production, research and processing hub, with plans for a 30,000-hectare modern ranch, expanded dairy production and large-scale feedlot development.

Speaking at a Livestock Stakeholders Meeting in Jos on Monday, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, said Plateau possesses the natural advantages, institutional capacity and historical legacy to drive a new era of livestock-led economic growth.

“Plateau State remains one of the most strategic locations for livestock development in Nigeria. With its rich grazing resources, favourable climate and world-class livestock institutions, the state is uniquely positioned to become the nation’s livestock powerhouse,” Maiha said.

A major highlight of the Federal Government’s plan is the proposed development of a modern ranch on about 30,000 hectares within the Wase Grazing Reserve in collaboration with the Defence Headquarters under the National Ranching Policy.

According to the minister, the project will boost livestock productivity, create jobs and help address longstanding conflicts associated with open grazing.

“We are working with key stakeholders to establish a modern ranching system that will improve productivity, support peaceful coexistence and provide sustainable livelihoods for thousands of people,” he said.

Maiha noted that Plateau’s status as home to the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI), the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology and several livestock-focused institutions gives it a competitive advantage in the sector.

“For over a century, Plateau has served as Nigeria’s livestock knowledge capital. We must build on that legacy to create jobs, attract investments and strengthen food security,” he added.

The minister also announced plans to promote feedlot development across the state, describing Plateau as an ideal destination for cattle, sheep, goat and pig fattening enterprises.

In addition, the Federal Government plans to modernise livestock infrastructure, including the expansion of abattoir facilities with the capacity to process up to 500 cattle and 500 pigs daily.

Highlighting investment opportunities, Maiha identified commercial pasture cultivation, dairy production, homestead dairy enterprises, piggery development, sheep and goat fattening, and livestock waste management as key growth areas.

“Livestock development should no longer be viewed solely as an agricultural activity. It is a business capable of driving rural transformation, reducing poverty and creating wealth on a large scale,” he said.

The minister emphasized the broader economic and social significance of the sector, stating that, “Livestock is central to national food security, job creation, wealth creation and social stability. The future of livestock in Plateau should be organised, scientific, inclusive, peaceful and profitable.”

While expressing condolences to the Plateau State Government and families affected by recent security challenges, Maiha stressed the need for economic initiatives that unite communities.

“We must promote economic activities that bring people together, create shared prosperity and strengthen peace across our communities,” he said.

He called on the Plateau State Government, local councils, development partners, financial institutions, private investors, traditional rulers and community leaders to support the livestock transformation agenda.

“This is a historic opportunity to reposition Plateau as Nigeria’s foremost livestock enterprise hub—one capable of feeding the nation, empowering women and youths, attracting investments and promoting peaceful coexistence,” the minister said.
