FG, UNESCO Launch Mobile Learning Programme to Train Teachers

The Federal Government, in partnership with UNESCO and the Pan African University (PAU), has launched a mobile learning initiative aimed at strengthening teacher professional development and improving education delivery across Africa.

The three-day Master Training Programme, which began in Abuja on Tuesday, is designed to empower female teachers and school leaders through mobile-based learning under the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative.

The programme is being implemented by the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) with funding support from the Government of Japan.

The initiative targets five African countries, Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya and South Sudan and seeks to expand access to quality continuous professional development through flexible, technology-driven learning.

The Federal Ministry of Education said the programme is aimed at ensuring teachers can access training opportunities despite challenges such as distance, limited time and inadequate infrastructure.

“The initiative leverages mobile technology to overcome barriers such as time constraints, geographical limitations and inadequate infrastructure,” the Ministry said.

It added that the platform would allow educators to continue learning through an accessible system designed to support wider participation.

“Educators can access quality learning resources anytime and anywhere through a low-data, offline-friendly platform,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry said the initiative is particularly focused on strengthening the capacity of female teachers and school leaders by providing them with modern tools and resources to improve teaching practices.

According to the Ministry, “the initiative seeks to expand access to quality continuous professional development, particularly for female teachers and school leaders, through flexible and technology-driven learning.”

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving teacher quality through digital innovation, noting that effective teacher development is critical to achieving better learning outcomes.

“Accessible professional development is essential to strengthening learning outcomes and building a resilient, inclusive and future-ready education system,” the Ministry said.

The government added that the adoption of digital solutions in education would help create more opportunities for teachers to acquire relevant skills needed for modern classrooms.
