President Bola Tinubu has urged political leaders and public office holders to emulate the honesty, simplicity and self-discipline exemplified by late former President Muhammadu Buhari, saying such values are critical to building a stronger and more united Nigeria.
Tinubu made the call on Monday at a special prayer session in Abuja to mark the first anniversary of Buhari’s death. Vice President Kashim Shettima represented the President at the event.
The President said Buhari’s life was defined by integrity, discipline and unwavering commitment to national service, stressing that his example should inspire both current and future leaders.
“I urge all political leaders and public office holders to emulate his honesty, simplicity, self-discipline and sense of duty. These virtues are indispensable to building a stronger, more united and more prosperous Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
He described Buhari as a patriot who devoted himself entirely to Nigeria, noting that his legacy was built not only on the offices he occupied but also on the values he upheld throughout his public life.
According to Tinubu, Buhari’s transition from military Head of State to democratically elected President reflected his belief in constitutional governance and democratic rule.
“His transformation from a military ruler to a civilian democrat marked him out as a rare figure in our national history. It reflected his belief that democracy remains the best path to national development and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
Tinubu added that Buhari’s modest lifestyle, personal integrity and dedication to public service earned him the respect of millions of Nigerians.
“Though President Buhari has departed this world, his life and legacy continue to speak to our nation. His example challenges every Nigerian to serve with honour, lead with integrity and place the interests of the country above personal gain,” he added.
The prayer session was attended by senior government officials, political leaders, members of the Buhari family and associates, who gathered to pray for the late former President and reflect on his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
