INEC Warns Nigerians Against Fake Online Voter Registration Website

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned Nigerians against a fraudulent website circulating online and falsely claiming that the Commission has opened a new nationwide online voter registration exercise.

INEC said the fake website was being used to circulate claims that nationwide online voter registration would run from September 28 to October 27, 2026.

In a public notice, the Commission said the website had no connection with INEC and urged members of the public to disregard the information.

“The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been drawn to a fraudulent website currently circulating online, falsely claiming that INEC has announced a new date for Nationwide Online Voter Registration from 28 September 2026 to 27 October 2026,” the Commission said.

INEC specifically identified the website as fake and warned Nigerians against visiting it or providing personal information through the platform.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the website below is FAKE and has no affiliation whatsoever with INEC,” it said.

The Commission warned that members of the public who click on the link or provide their details could expose themselves to the risk of identity theft and misuse of sensitive personal information.

“Members of the public are strongly advised not to click on the link or submit any personal information on the website, as doing so may expose them to the risk of having their sensitive personal data harvested or misused,” INEC said.

The electoral body also clarified that the voter registration exercise had already closed on July 26, 2026.

“The Commission further wishes to clarify that the voter registration exercise closed on 26th July 2026,” it said.

INEC stressed that any information suggesting that a new nationwide online voter registration exercise is currently being conducted through the fraudulent website is false.

“Any information suggesting that a new nationwide online voter registration exercise is currently ongoing through the above mentioned website is false,” the Commission said.

The warning comes as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections, with INEC urging Nigerians to be cautious about unofficial information relating to voter registration and other electoral activities.

The Commission advised citizens to verify electoral information through its official communication channels before taking any action or providing personal details online.

“INEC urges the public to remain vigilant and to verify all electoral information through the Commission’s official communication channels,” it said.

The Commission also provided its official contact channels for members of the public seeking clarification on voter registration and other electoral matters.

INEC listed its Call Centre as 0700-CALL-INEC (0700-2255-4632), its short code as 4632, and provided 090844444333 and 09050858629 as contact numbers.

It also provided iccc@inec.gov.ng as its official email address and directed Nigerians to its official website and news portal for verified information.

“The public is advised to disregard the fraudulent website and rely only on information issued through the Commission’s official channels,” INEC said.
