Nigerian singer May D has opened up about his troubled experience with P-Square’s Square Records, revealing how he believes his honesty with the duo cost him a potential deal with international music star Akon.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, May D recalled travelling to the United States for the video shoot of P-Square’s “Chop My Money” remix, which featured Akon. He said Akon later invited him to his office and told him he had several deals for him, even offering to fly him back to the US to discuss the opportunities.
May D said he returned to Nigeria and, because he considered P-Square the people who had taken him to America, decided to tell the brothers about Akon’s offer. He now regards that decision as a mistake, claiming that his relationship with the group deteriorated afterwards.
The singer also made revelations about his finances while working with the label. He said he did not have a bank account during his four years with P-Square and claimed that bookings and endorsements were handled through Jude Okoye. May D, however, clarified that he did not blame them for his failure to open an account, saying he should have opened one himself.
He further recounted that after leaving the label, numerous show offers began coming in, prompting him to finally open a bank account. He said he was shocked to discover that he had made more money from the bookings than he realised and used some of the money to buy his first television.
May D joined Square Records in 2011 and left the label in 2012 following internal disagreements. His latest revelations have once again sparked discussions about his time with P-Square and the management of his career during that period.
