Nigeria suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixture, leaving the Super Eagles with work to do in their quest to secure qualification.
The Djurtus took advantage of Nigeria’s struggles during the encounter, producing a strong performance to claim all three points and record a convincing victory over the Super Eagles.
Guinea-Bissau started the match with greater intensity and put Nigeria under pressure, while the Super Eagles found it difficult to establish control or create clear-cut opportunities in the final third.
The hosts continued to threaten as the game progressed and eventually extended their advantage, leaving Nigeria facing a significant deficit.
Despite efforts to respond, Nigeria were unable to overturn the deficit as Guinea-Bissau remained organised and disciplined until the final whistle.
Speaking after the match, the Guinea-Bissau coach said the victory reflected his players’ determination and commitment throughout the encounter.
“We believed in ourselves from the beginning. The players followed the plan and showed great determination to get this result.”
The coach added that defeating a team of Nigeria’s stature would provide confidence for Guinea-Bissau in their qualification campaign.
“Nigeria are a strong side with quality players, so winning by three goals is a result we are proud of. But we know the campaign is not over yet.”
Nigeria’s coach, meanwhile, acknowledged the disappointing result and said the team must take responsibility for its performance.
“It was a difficult night for us. We did not perform at the level expected, and we have to accept responsibility for the result.”
He said the Super Eagles would analyse their mistakes and work towards improving their performance in the remaining matches.
“We have to learn from this defeat, correct our mistakes and focus on the next game. There is still work to be done, and we must respond.”
The result gives Guinea-Bissau an important boost in the qualifying race, while Nigeria will need to regroup quickly and target positive results in their remaining fixtures.
The Super Eagles are expected to face increased pressure in their next qualifying matches as they seek to strengthen their position and keep their AFCON qualification hopes on track.
