Nigeria and Mexico are marking 50 years of diplomatic relations, with the Federal Government expressing readiness to deepen political, economic and commercial cooperation between both countries.
The Federal Government stated this while congratulating the Government and people of the United Mexican States on the country’s 216th Independence Anniversary.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, Nigeria described its relationship with Mexico as cordial and mutually beneficial since the formalisation of diplomatic ties in 1976.
The ministry said cooperation between both countries had expanded over the decades across political, economic and consular spheres.
According to the statement, Nigeria welcomed the growing momentum in bilateral relations, particularly following the inaugural meeting of the Nigeria-Mexico Consultation Mechanism on Matters of Mutual Interest held in Abuja in November 2025.
The mechanism, the ministry said, reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to strengthening political dialogue, expanding trade and investment, enhancing consular cooperation and advancing collaboration at the multilateral level.
“Nigeria celebrates five decades of mutually beneficial ties with Mexico and welcomes opportunities to further deepen economic and commercial relations through increased business exchanges and investment partnerships,” the statement said.
The Federal Government said stronger business exchanges and investment partnerships would translate into tangible benefits for the people of both countries.
Nigeria also congratulated Mexico on its independence anniversary, recognising the country’s nation-building journey and its cultural diversity.
The government extended its best wishes to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the government and people of Mexico, wishing them continued peace, stability, progress and prosperity.
