The Federal Government has congratulated the Government and people of The Gambia on the occasion of their 61st Independence Anniversary, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and advancing regional cooperation.
In a statement issued on Wednesday,the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, extended warm congratulations to his Gambian counterpart, Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad.
Describing the anniversary as a historic milestone, Tuggar stated, “This occasion marks The Gambia’s attainment of independence in 1965 and reflects the country’s enduring commitment to sovereignty, democratic governance and national unity.”
“As citizens across The Gambia gather to celebrate through parades and national festivities, Nigeria joins in honouring the resilience and aspirations of the Gambian people,” he added.
The minister highlighted the longstanding and fraternal relationship between Nigeria and The Gambia, noting that both countries share common history, cultural affinity and membership in key regional and international organisations, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).
“Nigeria and The Gambia have consistently collaborated in advancing democratic norms, regional stability and economic integration within West Africa,” the statement read.
Tuggar also acknowledged the strong bilateral cooperation between Abuja and Banjul across political dialogue, security collaboration, trade, education and technical assistance.
“The two countries continue to work closely in promoting peacebuilding efforts, strengthening democratic institutions and deepening regional integration in line with the objectives of ECOWAS and the African Continental Free Trade Area,” he stated.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to further strengthening ties, the minister stressed, “We remain committed to expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest and consolidating people-to-people ties that reflect the spirit of African solidarity and shared progress.”
On the significant national occasion, the Government and people of Nigeria conveyed their best wishes to The Gambia for “continued peace, democratic consolidation and sustainable development.”
