Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary, Engr. Abass Braimah, has called for an increase in scholarship slots allocated to Nigerian students under Hungary’s Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, saying the current allocation of 50 slots is inadequate for the country’s population.
Braimah made the appeal on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, during a working visit to the headquarters of the Tempus Public Foundation in Budapest, Hungary.
The ambassador urged the foundation to increase the number of scholarships available to Nigerians, noting that expanding the allocation would enable more qualified students to access higher education opportunities in Hungary.
“The current allocation of 50 scholarship slots is too small for a country with such a large population,” Braimah said.
He appealed to the foundation to reconsider Nigeria’s allocation, stressing the importance of providing more opportunities for eligible students to benefit from the programme.
“We appeal to the foundation to increase the number of slots allocated to Nigeria so that more qualified Nigerians can benefit from this opportunity,” he said.
Braimah also encouraged prospective applicants to prepare for the next application window, which is expected to open in November 2026.
“I encourage all eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the programme when applications open in November,” the ambassador said.
The ambassador was accompanied on the visit by the Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Plenipotentiary, Mrs Vivienne Ekwora Ogonyi.
He was received by the Director-General of the Tempus Public Foundation, Mr Péter Tordai, and the Director of Study in Hungary, Ms Orsolya Jánosik.
Discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening educational cooperation between Nigeria and Hungary, particularly through the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme, which provides international students with opportunities to study at Hungarian universities.
The visit forms part of the Nigerian Embassy’s efforts to deepen bilateral relations between both countries and expand educational opportunities for Nigerian students.
The embassy is also seeking to strengthen collaboration with relevant Hungarian institutions to support Nigerian students and promote educational exchanges between the two countries.
