Speculation Mounts Over Jonathan’s Political Comeback

Fresh political tension is building across Nigeria amid growing indications that former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan may formally enter the 2027 presidential race on Friday.

Although there has been no official confirmation from Jonathan or his close associates, multiple political stakeholders and supporters have intensified consultations in recent days, fueling speculation that the former Nigerian leader could soon announce a return to frontline politics.

If confirmed, Jonathan’s entry is expected to significantly alter the country’s political landscape ahead of the next general election, with analysts already predicting possible realignments across major political camps.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015, is still regarded by many supporters as a stabilising national figure because of his leadership style and his widely praised decision to concede defeat after the 2015 presidential election.

Political observers say his possible return comes at a period of mounting economic hardship, political uncertainty, and growing public demand for experienced leadership capable of calming national tensions.

“His name still carries national weight, especially among Nigerians who remember his calm leadership style, peaceful transfer of power, and image as a unifying figure,” a political source familiar with ongoing consultations said.

There are also indications that some opposition figures and political blocs see Jonathan as a possible consensus candidate capable of attracting support across regional and party lines.

“The possible declaration comes at a time when many citizens are searching for stability, experience, and a leader who can calm the country’s rising political and economic anxiety,” another source noted.

Analysts believe Jonathan’s potential entry into the race could trigger fresh alliances and strategic recalculations among political parties preparing for 2027.

“For the opposition, Jonathan’s return could become one of the biggest turning points ahead of 2027,” a source involved in the ongoing discussions said.

“It may attract old allies, undecided blocs, and voters who believe Nigeria needs a familiar but tested hand at a difficult moment.”

Despite the mounting speculation, Jonathan has yet to publicly comment on the reports surrounding his possible presidential ambition.

However, political attention is now firmly fixed on Friday amid expectations that the former president may finally clarify his position on calls urging him to return to the national stage.
