Tinubu Approves New Police Academy Campus in Ogun

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, located in Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State, as part of efforts to strengthen policing capacity and national security.

The President also sanctioned a special take-off grant of N15 billion for the project, which is expected to support the development of key infrastructure and academic facilities at the new campus.

The approval aligns with provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which предусматриes the expansion of the academy currently based in Wudil, Kano State into multiple campuses across the country.

According to a State House statement, the intervention fund will be drawn from the 2026 allocation of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TetFund) and will be used to finance priority infrastructure, student accommodation, training equipment, and other essential facilities.

A high-level consultative meeting involving key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), recommended Erinja as the preferred location for the new campus.

“The siting of the new campus followed careful consideration of student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term manpower needs of the Nigeria Police Force,” a presidency official said.

The meeting also noted the increasing recruitment into the police force, underscoring the need for expanded training capacity.

President Tinubu said the expansion of the academy would enhance institutional governance and modernise police training in Nigeria.

“This initiative will not only improve the quality of policing education but also strengthen national security through better-trained personnel,” the President stated.

The establishment of the new campus marks a significant step in the federal government’s efforts to reform and reposition the Nigeria Police Academy to meet evolving security challenges.
