Tinubu Charges INEC, Security Agencies on Transparency and Restraint

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cautioned security agencies against intimidation and high-handedness as residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano and Rivers states head to the polls on Saturday.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President stressed that security operatives must conduct themselves professionally and protect the integrity of the electoral process.

“Security personnel are deployed to protect lives, property and the sanctity of the ballot not to intimidate voters or undermine public confidence,” Tinubu said.

The elections, to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), will cover the six area councils in the FCT and bye-elections in Ahoada East II and Khana II State constituencies in Rivers State, as well as Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State.

The President urged the electoral umpire to strengthen voters’ confidence by ensuring transparency and efficiency throughout the process.

“I call on INEC to take all necessary measures to guarantee timely accreditation, seamless voting, accurate collation and prompt transmission of results, in line with the 2026 Electoral Act,” he stated.

Tinubu also appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to avoid inflammatory rhetoric and acts of violence.

“Democracy thrives best in an atmosphere of calm, tolerance and mutual respect. I urge all stakeholders to shun actions that could undermine the credibility of the process,” the President added.

Encouraging eligible voters to participate without fear, Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to credible elections.

“Fellow Nigerians, I assure you that this administration will continue to support institutions responsible for delivering free, fair and credible elections.

I am confident that these polls will reflect the will of the people and further strengthen our democratic journey as a nation,” he said.
