Tinubu Extends Customs CG Adeniyi’s Tenure by Six Months

President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, to enable him consolidate key reforms and ensure a seamless leadership transition within the Service.

The extension, announced in a State House statement on Friday, will take effect after the expiration of Adeniyi’s current tenure on August 1, 2026, and will run until February 2027.

According to the Presidency, the extension is intended to enable Adeniyi to complete the implementation of the National Single Window initiative and ensure an orderly succession within the Nigeria Customs Service.

“The six-month extension, which will expire in February 2027, is to enable him to consolidate the implementation of the National Single Window and ensure an orderly succession in the service.”

The statement explained that during the transition period, Adeniyi will work with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to strengthen the Service’s leadership structure.

“During the transition period, Adeniyi, working with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Board, will ensure the promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and the compulsory retirement of officers who have attained 60 years of age or have served 35 years.”

The Presidency noted that the measures are aimed at ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms while maintaining professionalism and institutional stability within the Service.

Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s and has risen steadily through the ranks over the course of his career.

He became Deputy Comptroller in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023, before President Tinubu appointed him Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023.

The Presidency said the six-month extension would provide the Customs chief with the opportunity to conclude strategic reforms and oversee a smooth transfer of leadership.

“The extension is designed to enable him to consolidate key reforms while ensuring an orderly transition and strengthening institutional continuity within the Nigeria Customs Service.”
