Tinubu Faults Poor Power Sector Privatization for Nigeria’s Electricity Crisis

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has attributed Nigeria’s ongoing electricity challenges to what he described as the flawed and poorly executed privatization of the power sector by previous administrations.

Speaking on the state of electricity supply in the country, Tinubu argued that the foundation of the current crisis was laid years ago through what he called ineffective policy decisions.

“Blame the electricity issue on leaders who gave us terrible privatization of the sector,” he said, pointing to past reforms that, according to him, failed to deliver the expected improvements in power generation and distribution.

The President lamented that despite multiple reforms over the years, many Nigerians are still confronted with unstable electricity supply and prolonged outages, a situation he linked to structural weaknesses inherited by his government.

He noted that the power sector’s current condition reflects long-standing system failures that continue to affect economic productivity and daily life across the country.

However, Tinubu reaffirmed that his administration is actively working on broader economic reforms aimed at stabilizing critical sectors, including electricity. He stressed that rebuilding the system would require time, consistency, and collective national effort.

According to him, ongoing policy measures are geared toward restoring efficiency and attracting sustainable investment into the energy sector, while maintaining optimism that Nigeria’s long-term development goals remain achievable.
