The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Dr. Binyerem Ukaire, has charged civil servants to embrace innovation, digital transformation and continuous capacity building as the Federal Government pushes to reform the public service for greater efficiency and improved service delivery.
Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Civil Service Week Celebration in Abuja on Monday, Ukaire said the success of ongoing civil service reforms depends on a workforce that is innovative, adaptable and committed to excellence.
She described civil servants as the backbone of government, commending officers and staff for their dedication to sustaining public administration and national development.
“Today is your day. We celebrate every one of you who works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure continuity, stability and progress in public administration,” she said.
Ukaire said this year’s theme, “Transforming Public Institutions Through Advancing Innovation, Participation and Inclusion,” underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to building stronger institutions through technology, innovation, capacity development and inclusive governance.
According to her, the Ministry must continue to lead government communication while adapting to the changing demands of a digital world.
“Let us embrace innovation, continuous learning, teamwork and excellence in service delivery as we strive to deliver on the mandate entrusted to us by the Nigerian people,” she said.
The Permanent Secretary urged workers to uphold the core values of integrity, professionalism, accountability and patriotism, stressing that continuous learning has become indispensable in modern public service.
“Learning, adaptation and innovation are no longer optional. They are essential if we are to build a responsive and world-class public service capable of meeting the expectations of Nigerians,” Ukaire said.
She also called on workers to take ownership of ongoing reforms and contribute meaningfully to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“Change has come, but you are the ones who will make that change happen. Let us all put our hands on deck to actualise the vision of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation,” she added.
The opening ceremony featured presentations on the six pillars of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP), with directors highlighting reforms aimed at improving productivity, accountability, digitalisation and staff welfare.
Director of Public Communications, Barr. Henshaw Ogubike, said continuous training, mentoring and talent development remain critical to building a competent and productive workforce.
“A capable workforce is the foundation of an effective civil service. Continuous learning is key to delivering quality service to Nigerians,” he said.
Director of Production, Publicity and Documentary, Mr. Ibidapo Okunnu, urged workers to embrace creativity and innovative thinking.
“Innovation is no longer a choice; it is the driving force behind efficient and effective public service delivery,” he said.
Deputy Director of ICT, Mr. Ifeanyi Okereke, also encouraged staff to maximise government digital platforms and emerging technologies to improve transparency, collaboration and operational efficiency.
The week-long Civil Service Week celebration will feature sensitisation programmes, a special Juma’at prayer, an interdenominational thanksgiving service and other activities aimed at deepening public service reforms and recognising the contributions of civil servants to national development.
