Outrage as 14-Year-Old Girl Killed by Stray Bullet During Wedding Celebration in Maiduguri

Tragedy struck in Maiduguri, Borno State, after a 14-year-old secondary school student was fatally hit by a stray bullet allegedly fired by military personnel during a wedding celebration.

In a statement released on Sunday, Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to urgently investigate what it described as the “reckless use of firearms” that led to the girl’s death.

According to the rights group, the incident occurred on Saturday, April 4, while the teenager was inside her home located within the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital quarters. The bullet was reportedly discharged during celebratory gunfire at a nearby event centre hosting a wedding.

A family friend recounted the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the incident, noting that the girl had been preparing to attend the same wedding when she was struck.

“She was inside the house when it happened, She had just finished applying henna for her mother and herself, excited and getting ready for the celebration. It was meant to be a joyful day.” the source said.

The organisation described the killing as entirely avoidable and emphasized the urgent need for accountability.

“This tragic incident highlights the dangerous consequences of the unlawful and reckless use of firearms, There must be a transparent, impartial and effective investigation to ensure justice for the victim and her family,” Amnesty International said.

The teenager was buried on Sunday at a cemetery in Maiduguri, as grieving family members and residents demanded answers over the circumstances that led to her death.

When contacted for comment, Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, said he was not yet briefed on the incident.

“I don’t have any details yet. Can’t comment,” he stated.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the use of live ammunition during celebrations, particularly in civilian areas. Rights groups and community leaders warn that without accountability, such practices could continue to endanger innocent lives.

Amnesty International reiterated its call for justice, stressing that holding those responsible accountable is critical to preventing similar tragedies in the future and ensuring the protection of civilians.
