APC Waives Screening for Tinubu Ahead of Primaries

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress has waived the screening requirement for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the party’s upcoming primary elections.

The decision was reached at the NWC’s 188th meeting held on May 6, 2026, in Abuja, where the committee resolved to deem the President as duly screened in line with the party’s constitution.

In a statement signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party said the move was backed by its constitutional powers to organise primaries and grant waivers under special circumstances.

“The National Working Committee resolved to waive, and has waived, screening requirements for His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and deemed him as duly screened in accordance with the Constitution of the Party,” the statement read.

The party explained that the decision was taken in the best interest of the APC, citing provisions that empower the NWC to act in exceptional cases.

“This decision was made pursuant to the powers conferred on the NWC… to organise and supervise the Party’s primaries and, in special circumstances, grant waivers,” Morka stated.

The NWC also pointed to what it described as overwhelming endorsements for the President from key party stakeholders, including governors, lawmakers, and party organs.

“The President has received overwhelming endorsement and vote of confidence from critical stakeholders of the Party at the APC National Summit and other major statutory events,” the statement added.

According to the party, Tinubu’s prior clearance ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries further justified the waiver.

“As the incumbent President having been duly screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, requiring his physical appearance before a screening committee at this time would be redundant and unnecessary.”

The development effectively clears the President to participate in the party’s primaries without undergoing a fresh screening process.
