FG Considers Social Media Age Restrictions to Protect Children

The Federal Government is considering introducing age restrictions for social media use in Nigeria as part of efforts to protect children from online risks.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the initiative while launching a public poll to gather opinions from parents, educators, young people, and digital experts on possible regulations.

According to the minister, the consultation is aimed at developing policies that safeguard children while still allowing them to benefit from the educational and social opportunities offered by the internet.

Tijani noted that the move is in response to growing concerns about online threats facing young users, including cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, online grooming, data misuse, addictive digital features, and emerging risks linked to artificial intelligence.

He emphasized that the government is seeking broad public input before introducing any formal regulations.

“Any framework, including age restrictions, improved verification systems, platform accountability, and regulatory oversight, should reflect national priorities and respect the rights of children,” Tijani said.

The proposed measure is part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to promote safer digital spaces for young Nigerians while balancing online safety with the benefits of digital access.
