FG Introduces Unified Tax ID System

The Nigeria Revenue Service and the Joint Revenue Board have announced the implementation of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system aimed at improving tax administration, transparency and compliance across the country.

In a statement issued on Monday , the agencies said the initiative is in line with Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandate every taxable person in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID.

According to the statement, the new system is part of ongoing reforms to modernize Nigeria’s tax administration framework and improve service delivery.

“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the statement said.

The agencies explained that the system is designed to simplify tax registration, filing and payment processes while consolidating taxpayer records and eliminating duplication.

“It is designed to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and ensure more efficient management of tax-related information,” the statement added.

The Nigeria Revenue Service and Joint Revenue Board said the initiative would also improve transparency and strengthen revenue collection across government institutions.

Among the key benefits highlighted are a single tax identity for taxpayers, simplified compliance processes, improved tracking of taxpayer records, reduction in tax leakages and better harmonization of taxpayer data across all levels of government.

The agencies also announced that the new Tax ID system would replace the existing TIN Validation API currently used by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, financial institutions and other organizations.

“Accordingly, all organizations requiring integration or validation services related to Tax ID are advised to contact the relevant departments for access to the Tax ID API and related integration guidelines,” the statement said.

Under the arrangement, integration and validation services for individuals, enterprises and business names will be handled by the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the Joint Revenue Board, while corporate entity services will be managed by the Tax Automation Department of the Nigeria Revenue Service.

The agencies said the rollout marks another step in the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen accountability, improve tax compliance and modernize public revenue administration nationwide.
