Funke Akindele Reveals Why She Stopped Attending Church

Popular Nigerian filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele has disclosed that she no longer attends church regularly due to the constant attention she receives from people.

Speaking about her experience, the award-winning filmmaker said her decision was influenced by the overwhelming focus on her presence rather than the purpose of worship.

“I stopped going to church because every time I go, people focus on taking my pictures,” she said.

According to her, the situation often becomes distracting, making it difficult for her to concentrate during services.

“I just want to serve God and have that quiet moment, but it turns into something else entirely,” she added.

Akindele explained that instead of engaging in worship, many congregants are more interested in capturing photos and videos of her, which disrupts the atmosphere.

“Before you know it, phones are out, and attention shifts. It’s no longer about the service,” she said.

The filmmaker noted that while she understands the excitement from fans, the constant spotlight has made it challenging to practice her faith in a peaceful environment.

“I appreciate the love, but sometimes you need privacy, especially in a place of worship,” she said.

Her revelation has sparked mixed reactions online, with some sympathising with her need for personal space, while others debated the challenges celebrities face in maintaining normal routines.

Akindele remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent figures in the entertainment industry, widely respected for her contributions to Nollywood both as an actress and producer.
