The Federal Government has condemned the recent attack by the Houthis on civilian targets in Saudi Arabia’s Najran Region, describing it as a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said the attack resulted in injuries to several civilians, including women and children.
The ministry described the attack as “a reprehensible act,” stressing that the protection of civilians must remain a priority during armed conflicts.
It said, “This reprehensible act, which resulted in injuries to several civilians, including women and children, constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the fundamental principles of the protection of civilians in times of conflict.”
Nigeria also reaffirmed its opposition to the escalation of violence in the region, saying attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure could not be justified.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria reaffirms its unwavering rejection of the escalation of violence in the region,” the statement said.
It added that “attacks that deliberately target civilian populations and civilian infrastructure, irrespective of the perpetrator, are unacceptable and must be unequivocally condemned by the international community.”
The Federal Government called on all parties to the conflict to exercise restraint and respect international law.
“Nigeria calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, respect international law, and prioritise the protection of civilians,” the ministry said.
It further urged the parties to return to the negotiating table, calling for “renewed and intensified diplomatic efforts towards a peaceful and sustainable resolution of the ongoing conflict.”
According to the ministry, any resolution must respect “the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security of all States in the region.”
The Federal Government said Nigeria remained concerned about developments in the region and would continue to engage with regional and international partners.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria remains closely seised of developments and will continue to work with regional and international partners in support of peace, security, and stability in the Gulf and the wider Middle East,” it said.
