Vice President Kashim Shettima will on Thursday, August 6, 2026, begin a two-week leave approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking his first leave since assuming office in May 2023.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President.
According to the statement, Shettima will use the period for study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to strengthen his capacity for continued national service.
The leave will also provide the Vice President an opportunity to review the programmes and policies of the Tinubu administration, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global issues, and prepare for the responsibilities ahead as the Federal Government intensifies implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“During the period, the Vice President will devote time to study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to strengthen his capacity for continued service to the nation,” the statement said.
It added that the period would enable Shettima to “review the administration’s ongoing programmes, deepen his understanding of emerging national and global policy issues, and prepare for the responsibilities ahead.”
Since his inauguration alongside President Tinubu on May 29, 2023, Shettima has played a key role in the coordination and supervision of several strategic initiatives of the administration.
The statement listed economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation among areas where the Vice President has remained actively engaged.
Shettima also chairs the National Economic Council (NEC), a statutory body comprising the governors of Nigeria’s 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other relevant public officials.
The council provides a platform for deliberations on economic policies and issues affecting the welfare of Nigerians.
According to the statement, Shettima’s responsibilities have also extended beyond Nigeria’s borders, as he has represented President Tinubu at major international and regional engagements.
At such engagements, the Vice President has advanced Nigeria’s interests on issues including economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development.
The statement described Shettima as remaining committed to the principles of loyalty, duty and service that have characterised his role in the administration.
“Senator Shettima remains deeply committed to the ideals of loyalty, duty and service that have defined his role in the administration,” it said.
The Vice President, it added, remains committed to supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to build “a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria.”
The two-week break is expected to provide Shettima with an opportunity to recharge and return to his official duties with renewed focus as the administration continues with the implementation of its policies and programmes.
“The Vice President will return to office at the end of the two-week leave period and resume his official responsibilities with renewed energy and dedication to the service of the nation,” the statement said.
