More than 28 people are feared dead after a wooden boat carrying over 39 passengers capsized on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, on River Nkusi in Kyaleni Cell, Kagadi District.
The Maritime Department joined Uganda’s Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja at the scene following the incident, where search and recovery operations are ongoing.
The Uganda Police Marine Unit confirmed continued rescue efforts, describing the incident as tragic and distressing for affected families.
Officials extended condolences, stating: “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and communities affected by this devastating loss.”
They added that search operations remain active, with efforts focused on locating missing passengers.
As part of immediate safety interventions, life jackets were distributed to residents in the area. Authorities urged strict adherence to water safety rules, saying: “All water users are strongly urged to always wear life jackets, avoid the use of substandard vessels, and strictly adhere to loading guidelines to prevent devastating water incidents.”
Vessel owners were also reminded of regulatory obligations. Officials stated: “Vessel owners are further encouraged to fully comply with water transport laws by ensuring their boats are inspected, registered, and licensed.”
They noted that all five Search and Rescue Centres across Uganda’s major water bodies are fully operational, providing inspection, registration, and licensing services aimed at improving safety and preventing future tragedies.
