The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi, also known as OG Millan, in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision followed disciplinary proceedings into the April 26, 2026 incident, which sparked widespread outrage after a viral video appeared to show the victim restrained and pleading before he was shot.
In a statement by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the police said the principal officer, Nuhu Usman, acted in violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms. The Force Disciplinary Committee described his actions as unlawful and unprofessional, recommending his dismissal along with other officers found culpable.
The affected officers have been redeployed to Force Headquarters in Abuja for administrative procedures, after which they are to be handed over for prosecution. The recommendation has also been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
Police authorities reiterated that no officer has the right to take life outside the provisions of the law and assured the public of transparency in the process.
The development comes amid growing public concern over the circumstances surrounding the shooting. While police had initially stated that the victim, identified in their report as Mene Ogidi was arrested with a firearm, the viral video has raised questions about the use of force.
Meanwhile, the victim’s mother says the latest killing has reopened deep wounds, alleging that this is the second time she has lost a son to police action. Speaking during a condolence visit led by Harrison Gwamnishu, she recounted how her first son was killed in 2022 under similar circumstances, describing both incidents as unjust and devastating.
“My two children were killed by the police. They first took my son in 2022, and now they have taken another one from me again. How do I survive this?” she said, breaking down in tears.
She questioned why her family had been repeatedly affected, calling for justice and accountability. According to her, no parent should have to endure such loss twice, as she appealed to authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
The incident has renewed calls for accountability and reforms in police operations, particularly regarding the use of firearms.
